Invasive tree species can destroy entire ecosystems

The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources has created a working group that should compile a list of invasive (alien) tree species.

These trees will be banned for reforestation, the Ministry of Environment reports on Facebook.

It is noted that this list will be developed for the implementation of the updated Forest Reproduction Rules. They predict that when creating forests, it is necessary to use local species resistant to climate changes with high protective properties.

The message explained that invasive species of trees are capable of changing or destroying entire ecosystems, displacing local species of wild flora.

The working group included representatives of:

  • Ministry of Environment;
  • National Academy of Sciences;
  • National Academy of Agrarian Sciences;
  • National University of Bioresources and Nature Management;
  • National Forestry University;
  • State Agency of Forest Resources;
  • leading experts of nature protection organizations.

The message emphasized that by 2021 Ukraine lacked a comprehensive approach to the problem of invasive species. Its settlement required coordinated legal and practical measures regarding the treatment of invasive alien species of flora.

Earleir, EcoPolitic wrote, that the Cabinet of Ministers approved the introduction amendments to the Forest Reproduction Rules, which will regulate the preservation of self-seeded forests, meadows and pastures within the framework of the law "On the preservation of forests".

As EcoPolitic previously reported, the European Commission will file an appeal to the European Court of Justice against Bulgaria, Ireland, Greece, Italy, Latvia and Portugal for the spread of invasive (alien) species plants and animals.
