One battery pollutes 16 m2 of land with toxic substances

Ukrainians for the first half of the year In 2023, 60 tons of batteries were handed over for recycling to the "Batteries, Surrender" organization.

Currently, 1,287 such collection points operate in the country, including Silpo, Epicenter, Novus, Jysk, Comfy, Leroy Merlin stores, as well as KLO and WOG gas stations, reports Green Transformation of Ukraine.

It is noted that the pace of collection of batteries has resumed to the levels before the start of a full-scale invasion.

“One AA battery pollutes 16 m 2 land with toxic substances that enter edible products through water and soil, ”the message emphasized.

The authors added that in March 2020, the volunteers of the Batteries Surrender initiative sent a batch of used batteries for recycling to Romania for the first time in the history of the country. Previously, assembled batteries in Ukraine were stored in warehouses, or they ended up in pseudo-recyclers who threw them into landfills.

Recall that in Kyiv, residents and guests of the city in January 2023 handed over for processing 1524 kg of used batteries, 177 intact mercury thermometers, 2988 energy-saving lamps.

As EcoPolitics reported earlier, Rivne residents sent 1,490 kilograms of used batteries for recycling in December, which were collected at 17 locations.
