The Verkhovna Rada adopted draft law No. 0199 "On the accession of Ukraine to the Minamata Convention on mercury" as a basis and as a whole, which introduces international rules for dealing with this poisonous metal.

This means that, with the help of international partners, Ukraine will be able to solve the problem with the Radykal plant in Kiev, where 10 thousand tons of mercury ended up in the open air on the territory of the abandoned chemical plant, reports the Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Ruslan Strilets on Facebook.

This decision was supported by 299 people's deputies.

Strilets emphasized that the ratification The Minamata Convention in Ukraine lasted about 10 years. Currently, 141 countries of the world have joined it.

He explained that this step means that such situations as with the Radykal plant will become impossible in Ukraine .

"We will be able to solve this issue with the help of international partners. "Similarly, how to solve the problems with the entire "Soviet heritage" – the remains of mercury in defunct post-Soviet enterprises that used outdated technologies," the head of the Ministry of Environment emphasized.

Strilets noted that now Ukraine, as a party to the Convention, will have access to the targeted resources of the Global Environmental Fund, and will also receive technical assistance from the Targeted International Program.

EcoPolitic before, in Kyiv, in the Darnytskyi district, at the "Radykal" plant are located 200 thousand tons of industrial waste, 10 thousand of which are highly saturated with mercury, which threatens the city with an ecological disaster.
