Ukraine wants to convene a meeting of the UN Security Council

As a result of the explosion of the Kakhovskaya HPP, at least 150 tons of engine oil entered the Dnipro River, and there is a risk of further leakage of more than 300 tons.

This was stated by a member of the National Security and Defense Council during an emergency meeting regarding the situation at Kakhovskaya HPP, according to the website of the President of Ukraine.

According to the information of the head of Kherson OVA Oleksandr Prokudin, the head of Zaporizhia OVA Yury Malashka, as well as the commander of OSUV "Odesa" Eduard Moskalev, no casualties among the civilian population and the military have been recorded.

It is noted that instructions were given at the meeting to evacuate civilians from risk zones and provide drinking water to settlements that depend on the Kakhovsky Reservoir. 80 settlements were in the flooding zone.

The message emphasized that the participants of the meeting agreed on a set of international measures, including:

  • convening a meeting of the UN Security Council;
  • appeal to international environmental protection organizations;
  • appeal to the International Criminal Court, since such actions of the Russians contain clear signs of violation of the Geneva Convention.

Chairman of the European Council Charles Michel u Twitter said it was shocked by the unprecedented shelling of the hydroelectric dam. This question will be discussed at the EU Council meeting in June.

"Destruction of civilian infrastructure is unequivocally qualified as a war crime, and we will bring Russia and its proxies to justice," he wrote.

The message emphasized that the members of the meeting were also informed about the current situation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP. The station's Ukrainian staff keeps the situation under control and has tools in case of any development.

It is noted that the meeting was attended by:

  • Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko;
  • Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba;
  • general director of "Ukrhydroenergo" Ihor Syrota;
  • Oleksandr Krasnolutskyi, First Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources;
  • Petro Kotin, president of NAEK "Energoatom" and others.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that on the night of June 6, the Russian occupiers blew up the dam at the Kakhovskaya HPP. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi called an emergency meeting of the National Security Council.
