Rain, wind and low temperature contributed to the decrease in the concentration of pollutants in the air

In the air of Kyiv during the week from September 19 to 24, 2022, an excess of the average daily maximum permissible concentrations of nitrogen dioxide by 3.5 times and formaldehyde by 2.7 times was found.

Compared to the previous week, the content of pollutants in the air decreased, says the weekly report on air pollution from the Borys Sreznevsky Central Geophysical Observatory.

According to the data of the observatory, the exceeding of the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) in terms of the average daily content of nitrogen dioxide was:

  • 3.2-3.5 times – on Peremogy Square and St. Kaunaska on September 20;
  • in 2.0-3.0 times – on Bessarabska Square, Lesya Ukrainka Boulevard, Obolonskyi and Peremogy avenues;
  • 1.0-1.9 times – on all other posts;
  • no excesses were observed at 37 Nauky Ave. (in the area of the meteorological station).

Exceeding the MPC by average daily formaldehyde content:

  • 2.0-2.7 times per street. Akademika Strazheska, Peremoha and Bessarabska squares, Lesya Ukrainka boulevard, st. Kaunaska, Peremogy Avenue, Demiivska Square;
  • in 1.3-1.8 times – on the street Oleksandra Dovzhenka (Shulyavka metro area), str. Popudrenka, Obolonsky prospect, in the Hydropark district (near the metro bridge);
  • 1.0-1.1 times - on Nauka avenue.

Other exceedances of MPC by average daily content:

  • suspended solids – 1.0-1.1 times on Bessarabska and Peremoha squares;
  • carbon monoxide – 1.0-1.3 times on Peremogy Avenue in the Svyatoshyn metro area (1.7 times on September 22).

The message explained that the reduction of the concentration of pollutants in the air was facilitated by weather conditions, in particular, low air temperature, rain and increased wind speed on certain days.

Specialists of the observatory selected and analyzed 1572 atmospheric air samples at 15 stationary posts.

"According to the forecasts of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center for the next two to three days, the unstable nature of the weather (possible formation of fogs, a slight increase in air temperature) will mostly not contribute to the dispersion of harmful impurities in the surface layer of the atmosphere," the report says.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that the residents of Kyiv region, in particular Kyiv, were called do not visit forests, even in the mushroom picking season.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, in Kiev the tenth Yapomogabox is opened , which transforms plastic bottles to help homeless animals, special children and the elderly, as well as the Ukrainian military.
