EcoPolitic has compiled for its readers the top 8 large-scale cases of environmental damage reported by the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), as well as the State Environmental Inspectorate of Ukraine and its subdivisions during the week of January 25-31.
1. In Zhytomyr region, 4 forest masters of the Luhynske Forestry branch of the State Enterprise “Forests of Ukraine” were suspected of official negligence by the SBI. From December 2023 to September 2024, the officials allegedly did not notice the facts of unauthorized logging in the forest areas assigned to them and did not use their powers to stop the identified offenses. Every month, they submitted reports to their superiors stating that no violations had been detected.
Due to their inaction, 966 trees of valuable species, including oak and pine, were illegally cut down. As a result, the state suffered losses of almost UAH 11 million.
The defendants in the case now face up to 5 years in prison.
2. Another forester, an employee of the Znamianske forestry of the Chornoliske Forestry branch of the State Enterprise “Forests of Ukraine”, received a notice of suspicion of official negligence from the Kirovohrad Regional Prosecutor's Office. He marked trees to be cut down in violation of the requirements for their selection.
As a result, during August-October 2023, more than 600 oak trees, robbery, linden, maple and ash were cut down on the territory of the Znamyansk community, the size of which did not meet the defined felling parameters.
The suspected forester by his actions caused damage to the environment on over 11 million UAH.
3. Eco -inspectors of the Podilskyi District by appeal to the eco -zarza web resource found an illegal logging for the amount over UAH 1.8 millionin the Vysokiv community in Zhytomyr region. They summoned the investigative group to fix all the circumstances of the incident and further investigation.
4. Specialists of the same unit of the State Inspectorate have filed a lawsuit with the SE "Grozinskoye" in Zhytomyr region Almost UAH 14.7 millionfor the illegal felling of the forest they found during an unscheduled inspection in June 2023. Now the attackers are threatened with a prison term of up to 7 years.

8. Eco -inspectors of the Dnieper District made calculations of losses and made claims to the Subotsi settlement council in Kirovohrad region for a total amount over 9.8 million UAH for the clogging and pollution of land by solid household waste in the territory of this council.
