The community of Zakarpattia has initiated the collection of signatures under an appeal to the newly appointed Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko, demanding to stop the illegal construction of a wind farm in the Runa valley and the roads to it through the primeval forests of the Carpathians.

This was reported by Zakarpattya Online.

The activists reminded that the illegal work has been going on since April. The developer does not have a positive conclusion of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine on the environmental impact assessment (EIA), which is mandatory for the work, but has already poured the foundation for 2 wind turbines out of 30 planned for Runa meadow.

Residents of Zakarpattia urged the authorities to abandon the construction in the mountains. They propose to move it to the plains, since, according to experts, the wind power here is also sufficient to generate electricity.

According to the activists, the energy produced will be exported or used to produce green hydrogen in Slovakia, rather than used for the needs of the communities of Zakarpattia. They fear that the implementation of this project will only cause environmental problems with water quality and floods, destruction of nature and tourism potential.

The initiators of the appeal noted that the new Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko, on his Facebook page, listed among his main tasks ensuring justice in every criminal proceeding and ensuring real trust in the prosecution authorities both on the part of our society, the public, and our international partners.

“Taking into account these publicly voiced correct tasks set by the new Prosecutor General Kravchenko, we decided to file a collective appeal to him demanding to ensure justice for our Carpathians – to finally stop the environmental crime in the Runa valley, which has been going on since April with the ”tacit consent" of the State Environmental Inspectorate and law enforcement agencies, as well as to dismiss the head of the Specialized Environmental Prosecutor's Office of Transcarpathia, Ivan Forhachi, who is criminally inactive and actually gives the green light to barbarians to destroy our unique highlands," lawyer Natalia Maistrenko, who published the text of the appeal, told Zakarpattya Online.

It can be signed by anyone who cares about the fate of the unique highlands of the Carpathians. The collection of signatures under the appeal will be available at the link on the Google platform and will last until 20:00 on June 29.

Recently, EcoPolitic reported that the State Environmental Inspectorate in Zakarpattia Oblast is delaying the inspection report of one of the two companies that are building a wind farm in the Runa valley and is not providing the public with it.
