Areas of self-seeded forest need urgent rescue

In Chernihiv region, 30 hectares of self-seeded, i.e. natural, forest were cut down near the village of Danychi.

Now the dead trees increase the risk of fire, because they were collected in piles near the Horodnya forestry farm, the state enterprise "Forests of Ukraine" reports on Facebook.

It is noted that the forest grew on the lands of former collective farms, which became unsuitable for agricultural activities.

"Now the tenants have decided to "clean up" their lands and have already grown trees under the ax. These areas of self-seeded forest need urgent rescue," the press service emphasized.

The report said that natural forests, unlike artificially planted ones, are more resistant to adverse factors, including droughts and pests. However, such forests are often cluttered, because no one takes care of them. Therefore, they often become the source of fires that spread to other forest areas.

The press service explained that in order to save such forests from destruction, these areas must be transferred to state ownership. Such issues are resolved with the land owners at the administration level. However, local authorities have quite different attitudes towards saving natural forests.

It is noted that "Forests of Ukraine" sent 310 requests to Chernihiv region for the transfer of self-seeded forests on a total area of more than 12,000 hectares. Of these, positive responses regarding the transfer were received for 3,000 hectares (55 responses). Also, the department received 142 refusals regarding 4 thousand hectares, and they did not respond to other requests.

Earlier EcoPolitic wrote, that in Ukraine, during August-September 2022, territorial communities transferred 11.4 thousand hectares of self-seeded, i.e. natural, forests to the forest fund of the country.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, in June 2022, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted draft law No. 5650 "On Forest Preservation" in the second reading. The document, among other things, is designed to preserve self-seeded forests.
