The modernization of the R-55 highway may become a pilot project

The State Agency for the Reconstruction and Development of Infrastructure of Ukraine has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with SG, a leading Korean asphalt concrete manufacturer, in the field of road construction using EcoSteel Ascon technology.

This was reported on the official website of the Ukrainian institution.

What is this technology?

EcoSteel Ascon is an environmentally friendly asphalt paving technology already patented by SG in Ukraine. It increases the durability of the roadway through the use of slag, a by-product of metallurgy.

In the Republic of Korea, this technique has been successfully used for 10 years. It reduces noise levels, reduces the amount of dust on the roads and minimizes damage to the pavement.

This method is also much more economical. The main component of the asphalt mixture is slag from metallurgical enterprises instead of crushed stone.

What works are planned in Ukraine?

As part of the memorandum, the Ukrainian and Korean sides plan to exchange technologies and implement joint projects. One of them will be a project on the P-55 highway. This is a highway of territorial importance in Odesa and Mykolaiv regions. It starts in Odesa and runs through Dobroslav, Veselynove, Voznesensk, Yelanets, and ends in Novyi Buh.

According to Serhiy Sukhomlyn, head of the Agency for Infrastructure Restoration and Development, Ukrainian officials began to establish cooperation with representatives of Korean companies POSCO International and SG in January.

Last year, EcoPolitic reported that PJSC ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih provided 70 thousand tons of blast furnace slag to border guards for free for the construction of roads along the EU border.
