Next to the flamingo lakes, dolphins were fishing

In Odesa, a flock of 210 flamingos was spotted in the national natural park Tuzlivski Lymany.

Birds circle over protected lakes and estuaries, where they feed on an abundant layer of moths, says biologist and ecologist from the national park Ivan Rusev on Facebook.

He said that the birds now stick to the protected area, which is forbidden to visit, especially during war. These small lakes of Academician Juvenal Zaytsev were greatly affected by the lack of water exchange in 2022.

The pink flamingo is a rare bird listed in the International Red Book as a vulnerable species.

Rusev said that the birds were also spotted over the Shagany, Alibey and Karachaus estuaries.

"When I was watching flamingos the other day, four dolphins were swimming nearby and fishing near the coast," Rusev shared.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that the first flamingos in 2023 appeared at the end of April, it was a flock of 35 birds.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, the unique small protected lakes of academician Yuvenaliy Zaitseva dried up in the national natural park Tuzlivski Lymany in Odesa region. Scientists believe that the reason for the drying up was the lack of fresh water flow and water exchange between the Black Sea and the Tuzliv estuaries, as well as a decrease in the level of the Danube River.
