The Specialized Environmental Prosecutor's Office (SEP) of the Office of the Prosecutor General in court succeeded in canceling the decisions of the State Service of Geology and Subsoil of Ukraine on the sale of a special permit for the use of subsoil within the boundaries of the primeval natural monument "Poppy Swamp" in the Rivne region.

This was reported in the Office of the Prosecutor General.

The Economic Court of Kyiv agreed with the arguments of the eco-prosecutors and satisfied their claim.

Lawyers said that in January 2024, the State Geonadra held an electronic auction, which sold permission to extract peat in the Poppy Swamp for the next 20 years. They explained that such actions are a gross violation of the law, since mining in the protected area will certainly destroy a unique natural object. After that, it will be impossible to restore it to its original state.

The Office noted that during the consideration of the case in the court of the State Geological Survey, they did not stop trying to sell a special permit for the use of subsoil within the boundaries of the natural monument and held 3 more auctions.

Currently, the prosecutors of the Special Prosecutor's Office have appealed to the Kyiv District Administrative Court to cancel the decision of the State Geodesy Commission on the testing of peat stocks in this area. There are plans to establish security zones around the "Poppy Swamp".

Experts emphasized that this primeval natural monument received the highest environmental protection status in 2021, which provides for a strict ban on any activity related to interfering with the life of the ecosystem.
