The Zhytomyr community has launched a pilot environmental project called Household Waste Management in Educational Institutions. The participants of the initiative are lyceums #14, 22, 24, 30, 31 and preschools #34, 44, 46, 55 and 66.

This was reported by the press service of the Zhytomyr City Council.

Each educational institution participating in the project will install sets of containers for separate waste collection – separately for paper, plastic, glass, and organic waste.

The goal of the initiative is to raise children's environmental awareness and to introduce a sorting culture both in educational institutions and at home. As part of the project, educational institutions will also hold themed competitions where children will create drawings about a clean environment and more.

According to Yevhen Barakh, head of Green Bin Ukraine LLC, the educational institutions involved in the initiative will receive a set of waste sorting containers and a banner indicating their participation in the program. In particular, informational materials and methodological recommendations on composting organic waste are being developed for educators and students.

Halyna Shymanska, Secretary of the City Council, emphasized that the culture of waste sorting should start from childhood. This will help to reduce the burden on the city's solid waste landfill, which has been operating since 1957 and has almost exhausted its resources.

She also emphasized that Zhytomyr has a unique waste processing plant that is able to efficiently process various types of waste. Therefore, according to her, it is important to use these opportunities in a comprehensive manner, combining education, infrastructure, and the community's responsible attitude to the environment.

We would like to remind EcoPolitic readers that the second round-the-clock mobile waste sorting capsule was opened in the village of Chabany in Kyiv Oblast.

The sorting capsules are designed to collect and recycle more than 20 types of packaging. In particular, you can hand over various types of plastic and textile waste for safe recycling.
