Waste is compacted at the old landfill sites to organize the accumulated waste as much as possible

The reconstruction of a solid waste landfill in Lutsk is underway in accordance with modern technologies and state requirements.

This was announced by Lutsk Mayor Ihor Polishchuk, the press service of the Lutsk City Council reports.

According to Polishchuk, a geomembrane is already being installed on the new landfill map, which will prevent leachate from the garbage from entering the soil. This will help reduce the negative impact on the environment.

One of the three leachate treatment plants operating in Ukraine is located next to the landfill, which will filter the leachate. Two nearby water reservoirs will be used as fire reservoirs and for other technical needs, if necessary.

Construction of the Lutsk waste processing plant

According to the mayor, Lutsk is actively working on the project of a new waste processing plant. The city has already signed a preliminary agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and developed a feasibility study for the project.

Polishchuk added that the main agreement with the EBRD is planned to be signed by the end of the year, which will allow the construction of the plant to begin. In particular, he emphasized that the construction of the plant will significantly improve the situation with solid waste in the city.

We would like to remind EcoPolitics readers that in April 2023, the city authorities of Lutsk began preparations for the construction of a waste processing plant.

In particular, in March 2024, Polishchuk and representatives of the EBRD signed an agreement on preparations for loan financing for the construction of a waste processing complex.
