The usual industrial cities of central Ukraine are not among the most polluted

On the morning of November 6, no critical exceedances of air pollution levels are being recorded in Ukraine. Major cities mostly have low pollution levels, so people do not need to limit their time outdoors. However, some regional centers show moderate exceedances of the standard.

This is evidenced by data from the international monitoring platform IQAir.

Kyiv currently has a low level of pollution, with an index of 16 US AQI. The concentration of the main pollutant, PM2.5 particulate matter, reaches 2.9 µg/m3. For comparison, according to the World Health Organization, the average annual standard is 5 µg/m3.

Monitoring stations at several locations are nevertheless recording moderate pollution. These are Konovaltsia Street (14.9 µg/m3 of dust), Omelianovycha-Pavlenka Street (13.7 µg/m3) and Kyrylivska Street (12.8 µg/m3).

A moderate level of danger due to pollution is also observed in the following cities:

  • Ivano-Frankivsk – 18.6 µg/m3;
  • Khmelnytskyi – 12.9 µg/m3;
  • Odesa – 12.6 µg/m3;
  • Ternopil – 12.4 µg/m3;
  • Vinnytsia – 11.6 µg/m3;
  • Lutsk – 10.3 µg/m3.

In the other regional centers, thanks to low pollution levels, the air is of good quality and safe for people:

  • Cherkasy – 8.8 µg/m3;
  • Dnipro – 8.7 µg/m3;
  • Rivne – 8.7 µg/m3;
  • Lviv – 8.2 µg/m3;
  • Chernivtsi – 8.1 µg/m3;
  • Poltava – 7.3 µg/m3;
  • Uzhhorod – 7.1 µg/m3;
  • Mykolaiv – 6.5 µg/m3;
  • Zaporizhzhia – 6.4 µg/m3;
  • Zhytomyr – 4.1 µg/m3;
  • Kharkiv – 3.8 µg/m3;
  • Chernihiv – 3.2 µg/m3.

As a reminder, Russian attacks can cause local increases in the concentration of pollutants of up to ten times. This is evidenced by the results of a study by Ukrainian scientists.
