According to forecasts, at least as much equipment will be installed this year

The total capacity of new solar panels installed in Ukraine in 2025 was 1.5 GW. For comparison, in the previous year, 2024, it was 800 MW of new generation. Experts attribute this to the situation in the energy system and the desire of businesses and the population to take care of their energy security.

This was reported by Delo.ua, citing Vladislav Sokolovsky, chairman of the board of the Ukrainian Solar Energy Association.

According to the expert, the added capacity of solar power plants is capable of covering a significant part of the daily energy consumption of several small cities or a large regional center. We are talking about productivity during the peak summer period for 7-10 hours.

Ukraine has increased its new solar generation capacity by:

  • industrial solar power plants operating under the “green tariff” regime;
  • solar power plants installed by businesses to offset their own energy consumption;
  • solar panels in Ukrainian households.

The trend toward growing solar generation capacity is expected to continue in 2026 as well.

“Recent events related to attacks on energy infrastructure require businesses and households to take care of their own energy security. In many cases, solar energy is the solution. Therefore, I believe volumes will not decrease, as both society and business remain highly concerned,” emphasized Vladyslav Sokolovskyi.

Solar panel imports have also increased

During the first 9 months of 2025, solar panel imports to Ukraine rose 2.3 times compared to the same period of the previous year. According to Delo.ua, citing Atmosfera, the total capacity of imported equipment exceeded 2 GW, which is comparable to two nuclear power units.

Rising electricity tariffs have also become an important driver for the development of the solar power network. The payback period for households has now dropped to up to 5 years, while for businesses it is up to 3 years.

Overall, experts note that the installation of solar power plants has become a considered decision rather than a panic reaction. Many businesses are including the installation of their own solar power plants in their investment programs.

EcoPolitic previously reported that in 2025, most of the new solar power plants built in Ukraine were small-scale (5–30 kW). These are most commonly installed by households, municipal enterprises, and small businesses.

The growth demonstrated by wind energy has been somewhat lower. In 2025, 324 MW of new capacity was added.
