In the future, we also plan to create an ecological and cultural center

The second phase of reclamation is underway at the Hrybovychi landfill near Lviv, during which it is being covered with a fertile layer of soil.

This was reported by the Lviv City Council.

Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi said that last year the first – technical – phase of reclamation was completed. Now workers have begun to implement the second phase, the biological one. Soil is being poured onto the membrane covering the landfill dome and grass is being planted. Later, perennial plants will be planted throughout the territory. Their roots will help to restrain the land so that it does not slide.

The Lviv utility company Zelenyi Misto said that the membrane is covered with two layers: first, a 30-centimeter layer of sandstone, and then a layer of soil of the same thickness.

To cover the landfill dome, a total of 18,000 cubic meters of soil is needed. The entire landfill will use 85,000 cubic meters of soil. These works are expected to last until the end of the fall.

Oleksandr Yegorov, director of the Green City Municipal Company, said that in the previous 2 weeks, workers could not work intensively due to heavy rainfall, but now the weather has improved, so they will increase the pace.

In the third phase, the Gribovytske landfill will be transformed into an attractive space. By the end of the year, the first golf course will be built on the dome of the landfill. It will be created specifically for the military who are being treated at the UNBROKEN center in Lviv.

In the future, the city authorities also plan to create an ecological center on the territory of the former landfill that will combine ecology and culture.

“There will be contemporary art and sculptures, and this location will be quite nice and welcoming for Lviv residents and guests,” says Andriy Sadovyi.

In early February, EcoPolitic reported that the first phase of reclamation of the Hrybovychi landfill in Lviv was fully completed and the second phase was underway.
