The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved the Procedure for Monitoring Chemical Safety Threats and Identifying Their Sources.

The relevant announcement was published on the government's website.

This document is part of Ukraine's European integration commitments and is necessary to reform the national chemical safety system.

According to Olena Kramarenko, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, the Ministry of Environmental Protection will carry out the monitoring. The agency will analyze:

  • data on the volume of production or import of chemical substances in Ukraine and their level of danger;
  • information on new chemicals manufactured or imported into our territory, for which no risk assessment has been carried out;
  • data of official state statistics.

Information about each detected threat will be entered into the registry, which will work around the clock. The register will contain information about each detected threat, its source, as well as the measures that must be implemented to minimize risks, and the terms of their implementation.

Olena Kramarenko noted that potential sources of threats to chemical safety may be the improper use of technologies in industry or a low level of staff awareness of the dangers posed by chemical substances. Therefore, such objects will also be subject to monitoring.

Every year, specialists will prepare a report based on the monitoring results. Among other things, it will contain proposals for strengthening security measures. The final report can be viewed on the website of the Ministry of Environment. The ministry will also send it to the Security Service of Ukraine.

As Ecopolitic previously reported, on July 2 еhe Cabinet approved Procedures for issuing permits for the use of a poisonous chemical substance and a particularly dangerous chemical substance that is withdrawn from the market.
