The preliminary cause of the emergency release of pollutants into the air is considered to be the sudden power outage of production facilities from DTEK

Ruslan Strilets, Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, has signed an order to conduct an unscheduled inspection of ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih at the request of the State Environmental Inspectorate of the Prydniprovskyi District.

This was reported by the Ministry of Environment.

State inspectors are to find out the causes of the emergency at the plant on June 23, which led to an excess of the maximum one-time concentrations of dust and CO2. They will also check whether the employees of the mining and metallurgical plant have taken all the necessary priority administrative actions in the event of a man-made emergency.

The State Environmental Inspection will inform the Ministry of Environment about its results 5 days after the unscheduled inspection.

The Ministry of Environment reported that ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih PJSC has a valid permit for emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere by stationary sources dated January 5, 2022 #UA12060170010378670-И-0094. It establishes the permitted norms of emissions from the operation of the enterprise and contains a list of necessary measures in case of accidents.

In accordance with the requirements of this permit, after the emergence of an emergency situation on June 24, AMKR informed the Ministry of Environment and SEI about the measures taken by workers at the coke-chemical plant to localize and eliminate the accident, including to minimize the impact on the environment and public health.

The company reported that at 8:00 a.m., the fire at the coke chemical plant was already eliminated, and from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., the equipment structures of the coke plant No. 1 were cooled with water. The representatives of AMKR assured that they have carried out the necessary set of measures to eliminate the emergency situation.

According to PJSC "ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih", on June 23, at their automated observation post #2, they recorded an excess of dust and CO2 concentrations from 07:00 to 07:20 in the morning with a northerly wind direction.

Previously, the deputy head of the Committee on Environmental Policy and Nature Management, Olena Kryvoruchkina, informed that the previous version of the causes of the accident was confirmed: there was a sudden blackout of production facilities from DTEK.

As EсoPolitiс reported earlier, on June 23 Kryvyi Rih and surrounding communities were covered with dense smoke due to an accident on the AMKR.

On June 25, we informed that SEI submitted a request to conduct an unscheduled inspection of AMKR after the accident.
