There are 10,000 tons of mercury in the open air on the territory of the Radykal plant

At a session on February 29, members of the Kyiv City Council supported a list of environmental measures for 2024, which includes the restoration of the unique Synyi Lake and the cleanup of mercury at the Radical plant site.

These measures will be financed from the Kyiv City Environmental Protection Fund, the press service of the Kyiv City Council reports.

It is noted that the document takes into account the urgent needs of the city and the requests of Kyiv residents.

The list of key environmental measures includes:

  • restoration of the Blue Lake in the Podilsky District;
  • clearing of the Lybid River brook;
  • disposal of incandescent lamps received as part of the national exchange program;
  • scientific research in the field of ecology and development of regional environmental programs;
  • reconstruction of the pumping station in Navodnytskyi Park, the filling station and technical water pipeline in the Pechersk district;
  • restoration of the hydrological regime and sanitary condition of rivers, as well as measures to combat the harmful effects of water;
  • anti-slide measures in "Nyvky" and "Cyretskyi Yar" parks;
  • landscaping of the city and installation of irrigation systems, in particular in Poznyaki Park;
  • preservation of the nature reserve fund;
  • measures to demercurize the industrial site of OJSC "Radykal", ensuring environmentally safe collection, transportation, storage, processing, disposal and burial of mercury-containing waste and reclamation of contaminated territories, in particular, implementation of project works. There are 10,000 tons of mercury in the open air on the territory of the abandoned chemical plant.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that in 2023, the unique Syne Lake in Kyiv, located in the Podil district near the Vynohradar residential area, dried up.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, on January 1, Law No. 3116-IX "On Ukraine's Accession to the Minamata Convention on Mercury" came into force in Ukraine, introducing international rules for the management of this toxic metal and a gradual ban on the production, import and export of goods containing mercury. With the help of international partners, Ukraine will be able to solve the problem with the Radical plant in Kyiv.
