28 July — World Nature Conservation Day
Maria Semenova

This date serves as a reminder of the fragility of nature and the main factors that threaten its conservation

The conservation of natural resources, a respectful attitude towards nature and its protection are a shared responsibility of all the world’s peoples and governments, for this is where the path to a sustainable future begins. World Nature Conservation Day serves as a reminder of the importance of these actions, of the fragile interdependence between humanity and the environment, and of the value of the planet’s natural ecosystems.

EcoPolitic has decided to tell its readers about this date.

History of the date

Despite lacking official UN status, the introduction of this day has become a symbol of recognition of the critical need for global action to preserve the environment. Nature Conservation Day also marks the anniversary of the adoption of the World Heritage Convention. After all, nature is one of the wonders of our planet that is worth protecting.

Remembering the Threat

This date draws the world’s attention to the vulnerability of nature and the main factors threatening its preservation: global warming and the resulting climate change, environmental pollution, human exploitation, and the loss of biodiversity.

Nature conservation as a daily choice

World Nature Conservation Day serves as a reminder that each of us, in our own way, can contribute to reducing our negative impact on the environment. This could include:

environmental volunteering as continuous participation in initiatives within one’s community – from clean-ups to tree planting;

  • informational support as a result of deep immersion in issues of environmental protection;
  • environmental activism as an effective expression of one’s principles;
  • switching to daily sustainable practices – waste sorting, reducing water and energy consumption, smart shopping, and choosing environmentally sustainable alternatives.

Everyone can reconsider their actions from an environmental perspective. And the more people adhere to these practices, the greater the impact will be.

Household waste sorting is an eco-friendly practice accessible to everyone. For guidance on how to start developing this environmental habit, EcoPolitic described it in a dedicated article.
