The new forest will help rehabilitate the area

In Cherkasy region, in the village of Kononcha, Kaniv urban territorial community, 500 oak saplings were planted on the site of a spontaneous landfill.

This will help to restore nature and get people out of the habit of throwing garbage on the territory of the former landfill, Kaniv City Council reports on Facebook.

"It would seem that there should be nothing in common between a green zone and a landfill. However, Kanivska MTG proved that this is not the case," the press service said.

It is noted that municipal workers cleaned up landfills in the villages of Kononcha, Babychi and Mezhirich in September. The new forest was planted by employees of the local Starostat and KP "Yablunivske".

"A month ago, we eliminated three garbage dumps in the villages of the community. Now we are gradually recultivating these territories, greening them. We hope that people will stop bringing garbage here," said the mayor of the city, Ihor Renkas.

The press service explained that reclamation involves the artificial restoration of soil fertility and plant cover. Traditionally, it is carried out in areas damaged by human activity and natural disasters. For this, it is better to plant plants that have high resistance, can grow in conditions of low soil fertility and restore degraded areas.

As EcoPolitic reported earlier, in Kharkiv in 2023, activists began to clear the Mokry Zhikhor ravine from garbage that had been accumulating there for decades.
