The new rules prohibit reforestation with non-native tree species

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved amendments to the Forest Regeneration Rules, which will regulate the preservation of self-seeded forests, meadows and pastures within the framework of the law "On Forest Preservation".

These rules also create new opportunities for public control, the press service of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources reports on Facebook.

"Now we have more opportunities to restore our forests, which suffered from the Russian invasion," said the head of the Ministry of Environment, Ruslan Strilets.

The new rules provide for:

  • establishing a ban on reproduction of forests by invasive tree species, the list of which will soon be approved by the Ministry of Environment;
  • requirements for forest regeneration apply not only to permanent forest users, but also to owners, tenants and users of land where field protection forest strips are located;
  • establishment of uniform requirements for the cycle of forest reproduction;
  • expanding the list of planting material for reforestation, in particular the use of planting material with a closed root system;
  • determination of standards to which forest seeds and planting material must meet.

The message emphasized that the rules also provide for new opportunities for public control. For example, requirements for mandatory publication of aggregated information about forest crop projects on the official websites of forest farms appeared in the order.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that in Ukraine 229 million trees were planted during autumn on a total area of 6,270.4 hectares within the framework of the "Green Country" program of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, in the Kyiv region discovered about 102 thousand hectares of self-seeded forests, which can potentially be used to restore Ukrainian forests.
