The authorities of Kyiv are being demanded to abandon the establishment of the National Memorial Military Cemetery in the Lysa Gora tract, which is an object of the nature reserve fund and historical and cultural heritage.

The corresponding petition, which is registered on the website of the Kyiv City Council, has already received 5,566 votes, reports the "Historic Kyiv" community on Facebook.

The article noted that the construction of the cemetery grossly contradicts a number of laws, in particular:

  • Law "On the nature reserve fund of Ukraine";
  • Law "On the Red Book of Ukraine";
  • tLaw "On protection of cultural heritage";
  • Law "On regulation of urban planning activities" and others.

"Also, a number of international conventions ratified by the state of Ukraine are being violated, the leaders of which outwardly pathetically declare environmental priorities, but in reality we see the diametrically opposite. In particular, the Bern Convention on the Protection of Wild Flora and Fauna and Natural Habitats in Europe, the European Landscape Convention, etc.," activists stressed.

They also emphasized that the defenders of Lysa Gora proposed a number of potential alternative plots of land in Kyiv that are in communal or state ownership. The construction of a memorial complex on any of these sites will not contradict the law.

The authors called on Kyiv residents and city guests to help protect "Lysa Gora" and to sign petition.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, eco-activists criticized the intention of the Kyiv City Council to build a National Memorial Military Cemetery on the protected territory, namely in the "Lysa Gora" tract in the Holosiiv district. They called such an initiative one of the biggest speculations on the topic of war.
