Compared to the previous week, the level of sulfur dioxide pollution has increased

In the air of Kyiv during the week with August 29 to September 3, 2022, it was found that the average daily maximum permissible concentrations of nitrogen dioxide were exceeded by 4.3 times and formaldehyde by 4 times.

An excess of concentration was also recorded on September 1 and 2 of sulfur dioxide by 1.3 times, says the weekly reports on air pollution from the Borys Sreznevsky Central Geophysical Observatory.

According to the data of the observatory, the exceeding of the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) in terms of the average daily content of nitrogen dioxide was:

  • 3.2-4.3 times – on Demiivska, Bessarabska, and Peremoha squares, Obolonskyi and Peremoha avenues, Kaunaska and Semena Sklyarenko streets;
  • 2.1-2.9 times – on Lesya Ukrainka Boulevard, in the Hydropark district, Akademik Strazheska, Dovzhenka, Popudrenka and Inzhener Borodin streets;
  • no excesses were observed at 37 Nauky Ave. (in the area of the meteorological station).

Exceeding the MPC by average daily formaldehyde content:

  • 3.1-4.0 times – on Demiivska, Bessarabska and Peremoha squares, Peremoha avenue, Lesya Ukrainka boulevard, Akademika Strazheska, Dovzhenka, Kaunaska and Sklyarenko streets;
  • in 1.9-2.9 times – on Nauka and Obolonsky avenues, in the Hydropark area, on Popudrenka Street.

Other exceedances of MPC by average daily content:

  • sulfur dioxide – 1.0-1.3 times on September 1-2 on Bessarabska, Demiivska, and Peremoha squares, Obolonski, Nauka, and Peremoha avenues, Lesya Ukrainka boulevard, Dovzhenka, Inzhener Borodin, and Kaunaska streets;
  • suspended solids – 1.0-1.1 times on Bessarabska, Demiivska and Peremoha squares, Peremoha avenue (Sviatoshyn metro area), Kaunaska street;
  • of carbon monoxide – 1.4 times on Akademika Stražeska Street (intersection with Vaclav Havel Boulevard).

The material noted that, compared to the previous week, the level of nitrogen dioxide and formaldehyde pollution decreased and sulfur dioxide increased. And the content of other impurities almost did not change.

Specialists of the observatory selected and analyzed 1692 samples of atmospheric air at 16 stationary posts.

As EcoPolitic earlier, in the air of Kyiv on the morning of September 5, it was observed heavy smoke due to fires on peatlands in the region.
