Not all household waste belongs in a standard bin, as it poses a serious threat to the environment. Consequently, a number of regional centres have launched their own schemes enabling residents to hand in used batteries, mercury-containing lamps and other specific types of waste for recycling free of charge.
EcoPolitic has compiled information on the timetables for the specialised collection vehicles and the conditions under which they accept hazardous waste.
Lviv and the city community
Lviv’s mobile collection point will, as usual, accept:
used batteries (up to 10 kg);
- fluorescent lamps (up to 10 units);
- mercury thermometers (up to 5 units).
According to the schedule by Utility Company "Bodnarivka", the vehicle will operate from Thursday to Saturday, stopping not only in Lviv itself but also in Rudne, Bryukhovychi, and Vynnyky.

Khmelnytskyi
In addition to the regional center, during July, the Khmelnytskyi eco-bus will collect hazardous waste in villages included in starosta districts with administrative centers in Bohdanivtsi and Kopystyn.
Residents can hand over the following types of hazardous waste:
- used batteries and accumulators;
- fluorescent lamps;
- thermometers and other items containing mercury;
- varnishes, paints, and solvents packaged in original containers;
- electronic and electrical equipment;
- household chemicals, including detergents (must be in containers);
- expired medicines.

EcoPolitic previously reported on where Ukrainians can dispose of used batteries. Please remember that batteries must be disposed of separately, as a metal container can rust in a regular landfill, and all the toxic contents will end up in the environment.
