The detected excesses are not characteristic of runoff from the streets

In Zhytomyr, eco-inspectors found a high content of nitrogen, iron, chlorides and other pollutants in the Teteriv River near the village of Sloboda-Selets.

Local residents noticed the likely discharge of sewage from the waters of the sewage network, the State Environmental Inspection of the Polissky District reports on Facebook.

It is noted that eco-inspectors took samples of an unknown substance from the drain sewer network and from the river itself 500 meters above and below the discharge site. Laboratory analysis revealed exceeding the maximum permissible concentrations of the following pollutants:

  • ammonium nitrogen;
  • total iron;
  • chlorides;
  • chemical oxygen consumption (COC);
  • biochemical oxygen consumption (BSK-5);
  • dry residue;
  • suspended matter.

The message explained that such excesses are not characteristic of runoff from settlements or enterprises during snow melting or street watering.

It is noted that representatives of the Zhytomyr water supply company and the utility company "Operation of Artificial Structures" examined and took water samples at the place of direct discharge and along the entire length of the collector. However, one of the enterprises, where the color of the wastewater was identical to that discharged into the Teteriv River, did not allow workers to inspect the network.

The report emphasized that copies of examination and analysis materials were sent to the Zhytomyr District Prosecutor's Office and the police.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that the Zhytomyr District Prosecutor's Office has initiated criminal proceedings regarding the discharge of wastewater from the sewage network into the Teteriv River.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, eco-inspectors in Kryvyi Rih calculated 46.4 million hryvnias in damages due to wastewater pollution of lands and a pond in the Kaletina stream.
