In Ivano-Frankivsk, near the city lake, the walls of the excavation pit at a construction site began to collapse, which could cause the destruction of the coastal area with a strip of old trees.
This was reported by ecologist Mykhailo Mykytsii, according to Informator Ivano-Frankivsk.
According to the ecologist, the situation that has developed in this area indicates a gross violation of construction and environmental protection standards. In particular, the hydrogeological features of the area have been ignored and basic safety measures have not been taken. Due to the intense inflow of groundwater and the hydraulic connection with the local source, excavation work of such depth near the city lake is completely unacceptable.
Mykitsey added that the edge of the excavation began to crumble due to heavy rainfall and significant waterlogging of its bottom. In particular, the depth of the excavation exceeds 4 meters, and the length of the potentially dangerous zone of landslides and collapses is about 70-80 meters. There is a high probability of further destruction of the coastal area along with a whole strip of trees, including centuries-old chestnuts and birches.
Experts added that some substance, possibly petroleum or hydrocarbon fuel, had recently leaked into the excavation pit at the construction site. All this is located at a close distance not only to the city lake, but also to the source of drinking water. And this can pose a direct threat to the quality of drinking water.
"Biological contaminants, which are always present within production and construction sites and urban areas, have entered the water from the territory (of the construction site). This pollution can get into the water with the flow of water," said Mykyta.
According to Mykhailo Mykyta, it is also necessary to carry out hydrogeological and protective recultivation of the excavation site, as well as preliminary treatment and disinfection of the water accumulated there.
