The CHP should provide about a quarter of the city's heat needs

JSC Naftogaz of Ukraine refused to build a powerful biofuel CHP plant in Lviv worth 1 billion hryvnias.

This was announced by the Mayor of Lviv, Andriy Sadovy, Interfax-Ukraine reports.

Sadovy said that the project was the initiative of the then head of Naftogaz, Yury Vitrenka. At least nine such projects were planned to be implemented in eight regions of Ukraine with a total capacity of 250 MW of thermal energy and 52 MW of electrical energy.

He explained that money for the construction of the CHP was not allocated from the city budget, it is currently suspended. For the city, this will be the first powerful CHP plant on alternative fuel, which will cover about a quarter of its heat needs.

"We planned such a project with the EBRD [European Bank for Reconstruction and Development – ed.] a long time ago, but according to their classic procedures, they would be able to start it only next year. But Russian aggression activated the mental process so much that we reached an agreement with Naftogaz, he said.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that in September 2022 Naftogaz of Ukraine began preparatory work on the construction of a CHP plant based on wood chips in Lviv and solid secondary fuel (RDF) in Zhytomyr.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, the concept of the municipal industrial park Sygnivka was presented in Lviv, which is designed to transform an abandoned industrial zone into a center of logistics and production.
