As of 11.30 on 22 July, air quality in most Ukrainian cities is not a cause for concern. However, there are cities and certain locations where pollution levels are assessed as moderate.
This is according to data from the international monitoring platform IQAir, analysed by EcoPolitic.
Based on the average readings from all monitoring stations in the capital, air quality in Kyiv is currently good. The main pollutant – PM2.5 particulate matter – is present at a concentration of just 3.3 µg/m³. This is below the World Health Organisation’s recommended limit of 5.5 µg/m³.
However, equipment at two locations records moderate pollution-these are on Myropilska St. and Yevhen Konovalets St. There, the dust concentration in the air is 9.8 and 10 μg/m3, respectively.
In the majority of large cities in Ukraine, air quality is within the “green” sector of the scale. Below are dust pollution levels for several of them:
- Dnipro – 5 μg/m3;
- Lviv – 3.1 μg/m3;
- Odesa – 4.1 μg/m3;
- Kharkiv – 9 μg/m3;
- Zhytomyr – 3.3 μg/m3;
- Rivne – 2.6 μg/m3;
- Lutsk – 3 μg/m3;
- Ternopil – 7.3 μg/m3;
- Cherkasy – 2.9 μg/m3;
- Poltava – 7.6 μg/m3;
- Vinnytsia – 3.2 μg/m3.
An average pollution level is recorded in Zaporizhzhia, where dust concentration is 10.5 μg/m3. For Zaporizhzhia and Kryvyi Rih, there is a warning about a possible exceedance of industrial emission levels.
Earlier, EcoPolitic reported on a study by Ukrainian scientists regarding the impact of war on air quality. The overall decline in pollution is attributed to the shutdown of industry, while local spikes-sometimes dozens of times above normal-are caused by enemy attacks.
