Offenders risk spending 5 to 7 years behind bars

Prosecutors sent an indictment to the court against the organizer and 5 members of his criminal group, who illegally cut down trees in protective forest plantations on the territory of the Mykolaiv district.

The Mykolaiv district prosecutor's office reported this.

Investigators established that a citizen of a foreign state created an organized criminal group. He involved 5 residents of the Novo-Odesa territorial community in it. From October 2023 to February 2024, offenders illegally harvested wood in protective forest strips. Then they transported it to a storage place, sprayed it and sold it.

In the course of the investigation, law enforcement officers searched the place of storage of illegally cut trees, the vehicles in which members of the organized group transported wood, and their place of residence. They recovered 9 mobile phones, 6 chainsaws, about 1000 logs of wood and 1 vehicle.

Eco-inspectors calculated the amount of damage caused by "black loggers" to the environment. It amounted to more than UAH 3 million.

Offenders will be tried for illegal cutting of forest (part 3 of article 28 part 2, part 4 of article 246 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). They face from 5 to 7 years of imprisonment.
