Specialists of the observatory analyzed 1,691 air samples

The average daily maximum permissible concentrations of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide were found to be 3 times higher than the average daily maximum permissible concentrations in Kyiv during the week of January 1-6.

Due to the Russian massive shelling of the city on January 2, there was an increase in the level of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide, according to the weekly air pollution report from the Borys Sreznevsky Central Geophysical Observatory.

According to the observatory, the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) of nitrogen dioxide was exceeded by the average daily content:

  • 1.9-3.0 times on January 2 and 1.2-2.0 times on other days – on Halytskaya, Demiivskaya and Bessarabskaya squares, Beresteyskyi and Obolonskyi avenues, Lesya Ukrainka boulevard, in the Hydropark district, Akademika Strazheska streets, Oleksandr Dovzhenka, Hetman Pavlo Polubotka, Engineer Borodin, Kaunaska and Sklyarenko;
  • no excesses were observed at 37 Nauky Ave. (in the area of the meteorological station).

Exceeding the MPC by average daily content of sulfur dioxide:

  • by 2.7-2.9 times – in the area of Beresteysky Prospect, Demiivska Square and Oleksandr Dovzhenka Street (January 2);
  • 1.5-2.6 times – on Bessarabska and Halytska squares, Obolonsky prospect, Lesya Ukrainka boulevard, in the Hydropark area, Akademik Strazheska, Hetman Pavlo Polubotka, Inzhener Borodin, Kaunaska and Semen Sklyarenko streets ;
  • no excesses were observed at 37 Nauky Ave. (in the area of the meteorological station).

Exceeding the MPC by average daily formaldehyde content:

  • 1.6-1.7 times – on Beresteysky prospect and Sklyarenko street (January 2);
  • 1.6 times – in the Hydropark area (January 6);
  • in 1.1-1.4 times – on Demiivska, Bessarabska and Halytska squares, Obolonsky prospect, Akademik Strazheska, Oleksandr Dovzhenka, Hetman Pavlo Polubotka and Kaunaska streets .

The observatory's specialists collected and analyzed 1691 atmospheric air samples from 16 stationary posts.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, 44 Christmas tree collection points will be open in Kyiv from January 4 until the end of the month, where trees will be collected for ecological recycling to give them a "second life."
