In 2024, it is planned to spend UAH 2.49 billion on the management of the exclusion zone

In 2023, Ukraine spent UAH 2.11 billion to maintain the safe condition of the shutdown power units of the Chornobyl NPP, the Shelter, the treatment and disposal of radioactive waste, and other environmental safety measures in the area.

This was reported by the DiXi Group think tank.

According to the information published on the Energy Map portal, in 2023, UAH 2.81 billion was supposed to be allocated for the management of the exclusion zone, but the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management (SAUEZM) spent only 75.2% of the planned amount.

According to the data, UAH 1.26 billion was allocated to maintain the safe condition of the shutdown power units of the Chornobyl NPP and the Shelter, which was built as a protective cover over the sarcophagus of the fourth reactor of the plant.

It is noted that UAH 430 million was allocated to maintain an environmentally safe state in the exclusion zone and mandatory resettlement. Additionally, UAH 390 million was allocated for decontamination, transportation, processing and disposal of radioactive waste, as well as for the construction of the Vector complex, where these activities are carried out.

Other expenses, including the preservation of the ethno-cultural heritage of the regions affected by the Chornobyl disaster, management and administration of activities in the exclusion zone, and radiological protection of the population, amounted to UAH 30 million.

It is reported that in 2024, the expenditures for the management of the exclusion zone are planned at the level of UAH 2.49 billion.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, in 2023 representatives of Norway and Great Britain announced the transfer of €5 million to support the development of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.
