They are necessary for the gradual reformation of the sphere of environmental protection and overcoming the consequences of the war

A number of environmental documents that will bring Ukraine closer to European-style climate governance are in the final stages of development. Among them is the Action Plan for the Implementation of the Environmental Compact, which defines approaches to compensation for environmental damage from military operations and proposals for "green" restoration.

This was announced by Ruslan Strilets, Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine.

According to him, the following documents are at the final stage:

  • Climate policy strategy until 2035. It is already being prepared for consideration by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine;
  • climate law aimed at low-carbon development of Ukraine. The government plans to approve it in the near future and send it to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine;
  • the discussion of the project Strategy for the implementation of the system of trading quotas for greenhouse gas emissions in Ukraine for the period up to 2033 and the operational plan for it will start soon;
  • signed Memorandums of Cooperation within the framework of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement with such powerful players as Switzerland and Japan;
  • the development of the Plan of implementation measures is in progress of the Environmental Compact . This environmental treaty was developed by the International Working Group on the Environmental Consequences of War. It contains 50 unified recommendations for Ukraine and the world, which define approaches to compensation for environmental damage from hostilities and proposals for "green" recovery. The action plan contains 66 points, most of which are planned to be implemented already this year.

The Minister also informed that CO2 emissions as a result of hostilities on the territory of Ukraine reached the mark of 180 million tons.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that the International Working Group on the Environmental Consequences of the War developed and presented the Environmental Compact for Ukraine (Environmental Compact), which is a road map for holding Russia accountable and restoring the environment. The document has 30 recommendations for Ukraine and 20 for the world community.

As EcoPolitic wrote in February, the International Working Group on the Environmental Consequences of War proposed to Ukraine to include climate policy and green restoration in the powers of the current Deputy Prime Minister.
